Holiday Weight Management

Our team at Weight Management at The Group knows this time of year can be the hardest, but we’re here to support you!

Staying healthy is a difficult battle for many of us during the year, but the holidays can make it especially challenging. It’s easy to tell ourselves ‘at this point I’ll just wait until New Year.’ Taylor Streitmatter, Nutritionist at The Group, understands our struggles and wants to help us get through the holiday season in the healthiest way.

What if my company is having holiday parties?

“Sometimes we can’t control events and obligations we must attend. My best advice is to opt to bring something healthy to the meal. You will have to make that conscious decision, but then you can make your own health decision instead of letting the situation control it.”

What if I constantly get sweets as gifts?

“Holiday gifts commonly come in a cookie tin and that’s OK. But, if you know cookies are coming maybe you don’t even bake any this year. Limiting the sweets in your house will help you in the long run. It doesn’t mean you can’t have a cookie all holiday season, that’s ridiculous. It’s about picking out your favorite one and enjoying that as much as you can. Moderation is key.”

What if I just can’t avoid the extra dinner roll in front of me?

“If your family is like mine, we do a lot of the family style and buffet style meals. When that’s the case, it’s easy to just keep loading up your plate again and again. This year, try to eat in a separate room from the food. Keeping the food in the kitchen and staying away from it will help you control your portions.”

What if I don’t want my health choices to impact family time?

“The holidays are meant for family time! A few hours after you’ve eaten, just ask family members to go for a walk. You’re still spending quality time with your family but you’ll feel better for it. If you’re staying in Iowa and it’s blizzarding, just remember to bundle up.”

Our team at Weight Management at The Group knows this time of year can be the hardest, but we’re here to support you!

“It’s never going to be easy, but sticking to your routine this time of year will make it much easier than stopping and starting,” Streitmatter said. “It’s all about keeping your health in the front of your mind.”
